Cagann studied architecture at Arizona State before graduating as a painter from IU’s Herron School of Art and his art combines both passions. While vintage photographs provide the starting point, the paintings focus on color combinations, shape and form in an almost abstract way.

“Early twentieth-century structures were built to last, with wonderful attention to detail.  My art springs from this same notion. I painstakingly layer my paintings to reflect this sense of craftsmanship and to create something substantial and long-lasting,” notes Cagann of the works included in the First Friday show, Coloring Historic Indiana II.

Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available during the First Friday opening, 6-9 p.m., on February 2, when you can also tour Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds theaters and a reception hall in addition to the gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.
