Then and Now

At Evansville’s Reitz Home Museum, visitors see the lifestyle of one of the city’s wealthiest families of the 1800s. A walk through the house’s exquisitely furnished rooms – many with original pieces used by the Reitz family — provides a rare glimpse of mid-nineteenth century Victorian life. Built for John August Reitz in 1870, the home remains one of United States’ best-preserved examples of French Second Empire architecture. The National Register-listed house is located in Evansville’s Riverside Historic District.

On Thursday, May 17, visitors can tour the home and enjoy wine and music on the lawn before Indiana Landmarks’ President Marsh Davis presents a talk highlighting preservation in Evansville. The program is part of a series of free lectures, tours, and activities celebrating Preservation Month, coordinated by the Reitz Home, Evansville’s Department of Metropolitan Development, and the Old Courthouse Foundation of Vanderburgh County.
