First Friday Art Shows Through Year-End Announced

At its Rapp Family Gallery in Indianapolis, Indiana Landmarks presents First Friday art shows featuring solo exhibits on Oct. 5 and Nov. 2, and a holiday art bazaar on Dec. 7.

Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available during the free First Friday openings on Oct. 5, Nov. 2, and Dec. 7 from 6-9 p.m., when you can also tour Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds theaters and a reception hall in addition to the gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.

On Oct. 5, the gallery hosts “I Am Story: B Farrand, the Experimentalist.” Brinton Farrand experiments with style, medium, and subject. His paintings use vibrant colors, light and reflection to depict a questioning approach to societal evolution.

Farrand taught high school art and photography in Mooresville, receiving a Lilly Endowment teacher’s grant in 2011 that allowed him to study classical realism at Studio Escalier in France. He is donating 10% of all sales from the show to the IPS K-8 Edison School of the Arts.

On Nov. 2, John Siskin’s photography exhibition, Courting Chaos, features new images exploring the human form (including some nudity). Using an 11”x14” camera and applying a combination of nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century technology and techniques, Siskin creates a chaotic environment that alters viewers’ perceptions of the subjects.

Siskin, a fine art and commercial photographer for more than four decades, recently retired from the faculty of the Art Institute of Indianapolis. His work has appeared in galleries throughout the U.S. and in books and magazines.

On Dec. 7, Indiana Landmarks’ gallery doubles as a holiday bazaar where visitors can immediately take home what they buy. The One-Day Holiday Show and Sale presented by Indiana Plein Air Painters Association features high-end art priced for gift giving and sold right off the wall.

You’ll find landscapes and still lifes by more than a dozen artists, including Beverly Bruntz, Mary Ann Davis, Corrinne Hull, Pam Newell, Donna Shortt and Karen Stanley, as well as affordable prints, note cards, jewelry and scarves.

Plein air artists create their works outdoors, on the scene, rather than from photographs. All artists will be present, so visitors can get background information on the paintings. For the Dec. 7 show, a complimentary shuttle bus will be available between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. to transport patrons among four galleries: Indiana Landmarks’ Rapp Family Gallery, Harrison Center, Gallery 924, and Stutz Business & Arts Center.
