Love Indy? Volunteer to show off your city!

Indiana Landmarks offers tour guide and other volunteer opportunities at upcoming information session.

Indiana Landmarks is looking for people who’d like to know Indianapolis in a deeper way and show it off to visitors as a volunteer tour guide. At a volunteer recruitment session on Dec. 6, the nonprofit organization offers information about leading tours of Indianapolis for school children, residents and visitors to the city, including convention groups.

“Docents will receive training to lead a variety of walking tours like our Historic Downtown and Capital City Critters tours for students, our popular Catacombs tours at the Indianapolis City Market, and Monument Circle tours,” says Gwendolen Nystrom, Indiana Landmarks’ director of volunteers and heritage experiences.

In addition to leading tours, Indiana Landmarks volunteers usher and assist in special events at Indiana Landmarks Center, do research, and work in the office. At the recruiting session, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., guests will have quick conversations with veteran docents and staff about the variety of volunteer roles and what interests them. “We’ll also discuss the training and benefits we provide to volunteers,” Nystrom notes.

Refreshments will be served at the event, held at Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis. The center occupies a restored nineteenth-century church repurposed as a cultural center with theaters and reception halls.

Indiana Landmarks saves vintage buildings, revitalizes neighborhoods and small towns, and reconnects people and communities to their heritage through historic places.
