Tours of Huntington’s United Brethren Block set for August 17

Newly revitalized block had once been on Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list.

Once in such peril that it was on Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list, the United Brethren Block in Huntington will soon re-open as UB Lofts and include 37 market-rate lofts, art studios, a culinary kitchen operated by Pathfinder Services, Inc., and Huntington University’s entrepreneurship programs.

Visitors are invited to check out the project, which underwent a $9 million restoration headed by Anderson Partners, at a Landmark Look tour hosted by Anderson Partners, Indiana Landmarks, and Huntington Alert.

Located on the north side of the city’s courthouse square, the block includes the 1889 Odd Fellows Hall, c.1915 I.O.O.F. Trust Building, and 1915 United Brethren building, connected in the late 1950s to house the church’s publishing company.

After placement on the 10 Most Endangered list brought attention to the buildings’ plight, Indiana Landmarks worked with Huntington Alert to remove the block from the city’s demolition list. Using funds from Indiana Landmarks’ Efroymson Family Endangered Places Fund and matching funds from the City of Huntington, Indiana Landmarks repaired leaky roofs, commissioned a structural and reuse assessment, and spread the word about the redevelopment opportunity.
