During Indiana Landmarks’ online Logs to Lustrons Talk on May 20, two couples share their experiences revitalizing two homes in Indiana Dunes National Park with starkly contrasting origins and styles: a nineteenth-century log structure and a post-World War II enameled-steel Lustron house.

Pat and Mike Shymanski will showcase their restoration of the Oscar & Irene Nelson House, originally built as a post-Civil War log cabin, and Laurie and Steve Snell will discuss how they disassembled, moved, and restored the all-steel, prefabricated Jacob Lustron home.

Todd Zeiger, director of Indiana Landmarks’ Northern Regional Office, will also share an overview of architecture throughout the park and lead a Q&A session during the online event.

The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (later Indiana Dunes National Park) was established in 1966. Later, the National Park Service acquired structures within the park boundaries, including the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair Century of Progress homes and several other historic houses. Indiana Landmarks is working with the National Park Service to advocate for preservation of historic park structures.
