A new apartment development called Depot Square Flats opens as the latest addition to Batesville’s revitalized Romweber factory complex.

The Romweber name looms large in Batesville history. Romweber Furniture Company manufactured home furnishings there for over 130 years, and the company’s Viking Oak Collection, based on Nordic folk furniture, remains highly prized among antiques enthusiasts. Beginning in 2009, the company repurposed its former factory into Romweber Marketplace, a multipurpose complex that includes office space, a restaurant, senior living, event space, and an antique mall.

Recently, another phase of the sprawling two-block complex of buildings opened as apartments called Depot Square Flats. While previous phases of the property’s rehab included retail and senior housing, Depot Square is positioned as luxury market-rate apartments, with floorplans from cozy one-bedroom units to sprawling two-story lofts.

Though the apartments boast high-end features including a fully equipped gym with sauna, a movie room for large groups, and even a dog wash station, historic elements take a pride of place.

Along with huge ceiling timbers and original flooring, giant fire doors and former office shelves in the halls offer tangible links to the landmark’s manufacturing past. Pieces of actual Romweber furniture dot the public spaces, where historic photos of workers, old equipment logs, and Romweber print-ads highlight the building’s history.

“Depot Square is a great example of modern rehab that refuses to shy away from its history and original use,” says Jarrad Holbrook, director of Indiana Landmarks’ Southeast Regional Office. “And with downtown shops right outside the door, it brings historic downtown living into full focus,” he adds.
