Drawing inspiration from quilting’s long history and the desire to bring the art to new generations, Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana presents “More than Stiches: Glimpses of Artistry, Ancestry and Alliance” on Friday, October 6 in Indiana landmarks Centers’ Rapp Family Gallery. The exhibit showcases each guild member’s creative take on the art of quilting and other fiber arts – from the simple to the sublime.
Founded in 2018 for people of color in the Indianapolis area to create and connect, the guild celebrates its five-year anniversary this year and its mission of quilting, communing, and giving back to the community. Members range from 9 years to 81 years and from novice to professional, including quilters who have exhibited nationally, internationally, and who are included in permanent museum collections. The guild welcomes new members of all experience levels interested in learning the process of quilting. Learn more at akomantosoin.com.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at the First Friday reception, when guests can also tour Indiana Landmarks Center. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds theaters and a reception hall in addition to the gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.
