Preparations are underway to relocate South Bend’s historic Poledor House to save it from demolition. Currently located at 211 Marion Street, the c.1913 house is one of the city’s best examples of Craftsman-style architecture.

The house is being moved to make way for future development on the site. St. Clair Development, owner of the property, donated to house to Indiana Landmarks.

Wolfe House and Building Movers from North Manchester will relocate the two-story house approximately two blocks to its new location at 402 W. Navarre Street. A Notre Dame School of Architecture historic preservation class conducted research and documentation on the house last fall as part of planning for the home’s relocation, which will fill an unsightly parking lot at the entrance to Chapin Park Historic District. Work will begin this spring to prepare the new site, with the move expected to take place this summer.

The home is named for the Poledor family, who operated The Philadelphia confectioner’s shop and restaurant in downtown South Bend for over 70 years. Members of the family occupied the house for more than a century, until Ted Poledor passed away in 2022 at the age of 90.

“We’re so pleased to be able to save this wonderful house,” said Todd Zeiger, director of Indiana Landmarks’ northern regional office. “This is a sweet resolution to save an architectural gem, and preserve the story of a prominent family and its beloved candy business.”

After some stabilization work and minor repairs, Indiana Landmarks will offer the house for sale with covenants to protect its architectural character.
