“To accommodate more people, we really need more volunteer guides,” says Gwendolen Nystrom, Indiana Landmarks’ Director of Indianapolis Volunteers and Heritage Experiences.

A free recruitment event on Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon will introduce the variety of docent opportunities, from walking and bike tours for adults and downtown tours for school children to city overview tours via motorcoach and single building tours like the popular Coca-Cola pre-restoration tour last summer.

“Indiana Landmarks docents learn about Indianapolis in a deeper way in order to show the city and its landmarks to residents and visitors. Our docents enjoy introducing people to historic places and telling their stories. And many find satisfaction in inspiring a love of history, preservation, and learning in the next generation,” Nystrom notes.

At the recruiting session, guests will hear about the opportunities, training, and benefits Indiana Landmarks provides to docents, and take a tour of Indiana Landmarks Center led by current docents. Refreshments will be served at the event, held in the restored and repurposed nineteenth-century church at 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis.
