New Deal Legacy at Versailles State Park

Versailles State Park was not originally established as a state park. In 1934, the U.S. government bought plots of farmland to develop the 1,700-acre Versailles Federal Park. Workers immediately began constructing roads and barracks in preparation for arrival of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) the following year.

Part of FDR’s New Deal, the CCC program sought to save and celebrate the country’s natural resources as well as put young, able bodied men to work in the depths of the Great Depression. In addition to construction jobs, CCC members received an education, with courses ranging from arithmetic and journalism to cooking and leatherwork.

At Versailles, CCC crews constructed a variety of stonework projects including paths, retaining walls, and public facilities like Oak Grove Shelter. The largest building in the park, Oak Grove Shelter has hosted countless reunions, gatherings, and weddings. The shelter remains in use today for large groups and events.

In 1937, when the CCC was called to Oregon for a dam project, a group of military veterans took over administration of the park. In 1943, the group handed the park over to the State of Indiana. Since then, the park has grown to almost 6,000 acres, with added features including a stocked lake and swimming pool.

The park continues to make improvements while celebrating its CCC legacy. Workers recently restored a massive stone hearth at the recreation hall, and an overnight camp for horseback riders is currently under construction.
