10 Most Endangered

Downtown Greenwood, Johnson County

Though Mayor Henderson was defeated, we’re still keeping an eye on seven buildings in Greenwood’s historic commercial district to make sure his successor doesn’t follow through on his plans to tear down the buildings. Henderson’s anti-green proposal: build new structures that mimic the originals.

Each year, Indiana Landmarks announces its list of Indiana’s 10 Most Endangered landmarks. Jeopardized by abandonment, neglect, deterioration, and sprawl, the 10 Most Endangered face imminent threats.

Some of the 10 Most are long-vacant and dilapidated structures that have outlived their original purposes. Others are threatened by urban sprawl or its opposite, lack of redevelopment prospects. Indiana Landmarks uses the Most Endangered list to bring public attention to the imperiled sites and mobilize support for their preservation.
