Tour Explores Richmond Architect’s Legacy

Oct. 5 walking tour showcases local landmarks

At the turn of the twentieth century, architect John A. Hasecoster played an outsized role in designing houses, commercial and industrial buildings in Richmond, Ind., many of which remain standing today. On October 5, a two-hour guided walking tour showcases the prolific legacy of “the man who built Richmond.”

Hasecoster practiced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a portfolio of more than 150 projects ranging from quaint Queen Anne cottages to sprawling industrial complexes. Though Hasecoster’s designs were built beyond Richmond, his work is considered instrumental in shaping the city he called home.

Tourgoers will begin the afternoon with an inside look at the grand Gennett Mansion, designed by the architect for one of Richmond’s wealthiest nineteenth-century families, before proceeding to Main Street for a closer look at the varied designs of Hasecoster’s commercial buildings completed between 1877 and 1900.

The event is hosted in partnership with Richmond Columbian Properties, Gennett Mansion, and Richmond Neighborhood Restoration.
