Free Juneteenth program explores Black resilience

Speakers share how African Americans have built on a heritage of survival.

In celebration of Juneteenth, a federally designated holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, Indiana Landmarks Black Heritage Preservation Program presents an in-depth exploration of Black resilience during a free public program on June 19 at Indiana Landmarks Center in Indianapolis.

“Black Resilience in Indiana: Building on the Heritage of Survival” will examine the extraordinary ability of African Americans throughout history to overcome astounding challenges, finding joy and the power to effect positive change in their lives, families, and communities.

Dr. Lasana D. Kazembe, award-winning poet, educator, and critical Black scholar, serves as keynote speaker, followed by a panel discussion featuring experts on spiritual, mental, emotional, and financial resilience.

Moderated by Indianapolis psychologist Dr. Benetta Johnson, the discussion will include time for audience questions. Guest panelists include Dr. Winterbourne Harrison-Jones, pastor of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis; Danielle Rene Henderson of the Indiana Association of Black Psychologists; and Cynthia Newman, registered investment principal at the Newman Group.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at Indiana Landmarks Center with program 6-8 p.m. in person and online.

“We’re excited to present this enlightening program as a way to recognize Juneteenth and share the history it represents,” said Eunice Trotter, director of Indiana Landmarks Black Heritage Preservation Program. We hope the audience will leave with a tool kit of ways to not only survive these times, but also to excel.”
