Famous Modernist architect and Indy native, Evans Woollen, subject of Oct. 30 talk
Clowes Hall and the Minton-Capehart Federal Building among Woollen’s works
The impact of prolific Modernist architect Evans Woollen (1927-2016) can be seen throughout Indianapolis, from iconic public landmarks like Clowes Hall and the Minton-Capehart Federal Building to private residences.
On Oct. 30, author Phillip Cox and photographer Niall Cronin present an in-depth look at such works and Woollen’s enduring legacy in an Indiana Landmarks presentation based on their newly published book, What a Building Does: The Hoosier Modernisms of Evans Woollen.
Featuring new and never-before-seen archival photography, the event will highlight the progression of Woollen’s career and the architect’s complex relationship to his hometown of Indianapolis.
Cox and Cronin, native Hoosiers now living in New York City, collaborated on What a Building Does, which was published by Indiana University Press in September. Cox, a writer, previously worked for the design firm Pentagram. Cronin, a photographer, has shown work at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA) and Edington Gallery, and has been published in the Financial Times, Fast Company and Time Out. A book signing with the authors, including an opportunity to purchase What a Building Does, will follow the presentation.
The talk is sponsored by Indiana Landmarks’ affinity group, Indiana Modern.
