From its state headquarters in Indianapolis’s historic Old Northside neighborhood, the organization operates nine regional offices across the state. These offices, staffed by dedicated professionals, provide expertise and resources to help local communities save and repurpose historic sites. Indiana Landmarks’ wide-ranging operations include grant and loan programs, rescuing and rehabilitating endangered properties, buying and selling real estate, easement protections, preservation advocacy, and educational initiatives including tours, lectures, workshops, publications, and a major annual statewide conference.
Position Description
Indiana Landmarks seeks a highly motivated professional to lead the organization’s historic preservation activities in central Indiana. The position reports to and collaborates with the Vice President of Preservation Services and is based at Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters, Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Avenue, Indianapolis. The Director manages one full-time staff and occasional interns or volunteers. It is required that the successful candidate reside within the boundaries represented by the Central Regional Office.
Duties
- Represent Indiana Landmarks in advocacy efforts to save endangered landmarks in a 13-county region.
- Identify threatened historic properties and devise strategies to save them.
- Provide technical assistance to stakeholders, organizations, and property owners, and facilitate community and neighborhood revitalization.
- Work with individuals, community groups, and local governments on preservation issues and projects, including promoting use of the grant and real estate loan programs of Indiana Landmarks.
- Educate communities on the value of historic preservation and assist in membership development and fundraising.
- Manage rehabilitation projects on behalf of Indiana Landmarks as needed.
- Manage the design review process of Indianapolis properties protected by the organization’s preservation covenants.
- Provide staff assistance on a contractual basis to historic preservation commissions.
- Help establish new preservation organizations and commissions in the region.
- Identify project-based funding sources and share that information as needed with property owners.
- Develop engaging events for Indiana Landmarks members and the public.
- Collaborate and interact with colleagues across the organization and with external partners.
- Contribute content for articles in Indiana Preservation, our bi-monthly magazine.
- Lead or assist with projects and programs assigned by the Vice President of Preservation Services.

Qualifications
- Knowledge and implementation of historic preservation principles and rehabilitation standards.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven “people” skills, including ability to interact with and motivate individuals and groups.
- General knowledge of computers, photography, and grant-writing.
- Bachelor’s degree required in historic preservation, architectural history, history, project management, material culture or related field; Master’s degree preferred. Prior work experience in the field will be strongly considered; experience with historic properties preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel across central Indiana as needed.

Salary Range: $75,000 – $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience
