Spring Affiliate Council Meeting
Learn how communities can help address the shortage of skilled tradespeople needed to care for and preserve historic buildings.
March 11, 2026
12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT
Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., Indianapolis and online
Across our communities, historic homes and buildings are losing more than wood windows, plaster walls, and lime-based mortar. They’re losing the skilled hands and knowledge needed to care for them. As traditional building materials disappear from the housing stock, so too does the workforce trained to repair them. A recent Ivy Tech study underscores the challenge, identifying a critical shortage of skilled tradespeople, with the average professional now over the age of 55.
Join Todd Zeiger, Indiana Landmarks’ vice president of heritage trades and Northern Regional Office director, to discover how grassroots preservation organizations can help reverse this trend. Learn about practical, scalable solutions that reach students from elementary school through high school, strengthen career and technical education pathways, and empower do-it-yourselfers. Discover how Indiana Landmarks’ menu of heritage trades programs can support your organization by launching local training opportunities or building partnerships with schools to ensure the skills needed to preserve our historic places are passed on to the next generation.
For those unable to attend in person, the main presentation will be broadcast via Zoom from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. EDT.
