Bridging the Gap

When the Fountain County Art Council hired an experienced covered bridge contractor to assess Cades Mill Covered Bridge in 2019, the report contained grim news. The inspection revealed a broken chord, serious damage that put the span in imminent danger. Without emergency repairs, the bridge could collapse.

Fountain County boasts three historic covered bridges. Constructed in 1854, the Cades Mill Bridge is the oldest. Spanning 150 feet over Coal Creek, it holds status as the state’s oldest covered bridge still in its original location. The county bypassed the bridge decades ago, and with minimal maintenance since then, the structure’s condition declined. By the time the inspection report raised the alarm, the accumulated deterioration left the historic bridge in precarious shape.

The local group sprang into action, raising funds for emergency repairs. But with repairs estimated at more than $400,000, finding money for the bridge’s full rehabilitation remains a challenge. Unfortunately, pandemic-related labor and materials shortages are expected to increase that cost. County commissioners indicate they are willing to allocate some funds toward the project, but resources are limited.

To boost fundraising, the Fountain County Art Council’s Historical Committee is holding a Cades Mill Covered Bridge Benefit on March 6, 2022, featuring local entertainment, food, and artisan demonstrations. Presented with support from the Covington Community Foundation, the event will take place 1:30 to 4 p.m. at The Landing near Veedersburg. To order tickets, contact Carol Freese at 765-793-2710.
