June 4 tour features mid-century landscapes

Annual “Back to the Future” tour celebrates Mid-Century Modern architecture and gardens in Indianapolis

After a two-year hiatus, Indiana Landmarks is once again staging its annual “Back to the Future” tour highlighting Mid-Century Modern architecture. On June 4, this year’s tour features outdoor living spaces and mid-century landscapes at four private properties and Newfields in Indianapolis.

Mid-Century Modern houses often incorporate walls of windows, skylights, and other features that maximize views of surrounding nature, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This year’s outdoor-only tour highlights the spaces those views are designed to embrace, including landscapes and gardens at the following sites:

• Mattison Estate in Crow’s Nest Neighborhood
• “Forebears,” the Fortune Estate in Crow’s Nest Neighborhood
• Orchard House, the Leppard Estate in Crow’s Nest Neighborhood
• Four Seasons Garden at Newfields
• Highland Golf and Country Club

“These historic properties each boast spectacular landscapes by regionally and nationally known designers,” says Mark Dollase, vice president of preservation services for Indiana Landmarks. “This is a rare opportunity to explore standout private sites, and proceeds from the tour will help fund our ongoing work to preserve mid-twentieth-century landmarks around the state.”

On the day of the tour, guests will check in at tour headquarters, located at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, 5136 Michigan Road, to exchange their Eventbrite tickets for a program and board shuttles to the tour sites. Shuttles will circulate between sites throughout the tour, so guests can spend as much time as desired at individual locations before boarding the next shuttle. Short walks are required between several properties, so comfortable shoes are recommended. To fully tour some sites, guests may need to climb steps or walk on uneven pavement, gravel, or turf.

Back to the Future is presented by Indiana Modern, an affinity group of Indiana Landmarks that works to preserve and promote the best of mid-twentieth century architecture, design, and landscapes across the state.
