Popular Logs to Lustrons Tour returns at Indiana Dunes

Event features 17 northwest Indiana sites spanning a century of architecture.

The popular Logs to Lustrons Tour returns on June 25, featuring 17 northwest Indiana sites spanning over a century of architecture, from rustic log structures to Lustron homes – the prefabricated enameled steel houses developed post WWII. The tour features several restored residences not normally open to the public, plus vacant landmarks in need of a new use. Nine interiors will be open for touring.

Indiana Landmarks and the Indiana Dunes National Park sponsor the annual tour, which was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Children who join the tour (with parent or guardian) can earn a Junior Ranger badge by picking up a workbook, program, and a bag with sketch book and pencil when they check-in. At the end of the tour, they show the completed workbook to a park ranger at the check-in site to earn a badge. Children under 16 are welcome to attend the tour for free but will still need to reserve a ticket.

The night before the tour, staff from Indiana Landmarks and Indiana Dunes National Park will give a lecture on the park’s heritage, preservation of its historic sites, and the architectural legacy of the Dunes.

Indiana Landmarks is currently recruiting guides for the tour. In exchange for service, guides will receive a free ticket for the tour to be used before or after their shift. A training session for guides will take place at 6:30 p.m. on June 23 at the Indiana Dunes Visitors Center. For more information on volunteering, contact Indiana Landmarks’ Northwest Field Office, 219-947-2657.
