Long History

This classic country church needs some TLC but offers possibilities for reuse as a fabulous living space or event venue. Located in a pastoral setting in Martin County near Loogootee, it must be relocated to a new site and is offered at nominal cost to a qualified buyer who can secure a new site, preferably in Martin County. Constructed in 1882, South Martin Church is unusual in that it was built to house both Methodist and United Brethren congregations: the two denominations sometimes met jointly and sometimes offered services on alternating Sundays. Although the Methodists disbanded in 1908, the United Brethren congregation continued to meet here until 1948. Historic photos show that the steeple was originally taller but was shortened following a lightning strike and later storm damage.

Rehabilitation is needed inside and out. The church will be sold with Indiana Landmarks’ preservation covenants protecting original architectural features. Indiana Landmarks can provide contacts and guidance on the building move process. To learn more or arrange a tour of the property, contact Indiana Landmarks’ Southern Regional Office, 812-284-4534.
