ArchiCamps offer hands-on history lessons

Looking for a fun educational summer activity for the children in your life? Consider ArchiCamp – day camps for kids ages 8 to 12, exploring history, architecture, and local landmarks.

Indiana Landmarks’ Southern Regional Office is teaming with local organizations to offer two-day camps in Jasper, Madison, and Jeffersonville. Each camp offers a mix of hands-on activities, tours, and games sure to appeal to any budding preservationist, architect, or historian.

Our Jasper camp takes place June 19-20 in the historic Schaeffer log barn, in partnership with Preserve Dubois County. Campers will grind corn at the reconstructed Jasper City Mill, tour the Jasper Desk Company, use historic hand tools, construct bird houses, and learn more about the history of the area.

The Madison, ArchiCamp takes place June 27-28 at the Madison-Lanier Visitors Center. Highlights of the Pioneer Days-themed camp include visits to some of the city’s earliest structures, learning about timber framing, how to build a log cabin, and how to use nineteenth-century tools. The second day of camp includes a trip to swim at the historic Crystal Beach Pool.

Howard Steamboat Museum hosts the Jeffersonville ArchiCamp, July 16-17. Campers will tour the magnificent Howard mansion, take a walking tour of downtown Jeffersonville, construct model buildings to create a city, learn about Ohio River pirates, and more.

Each camp costs $30 per child, which includes refreshments, educational materials, and souvenirs. Children should bring a sack lunch both days.
